A gripping, real-life tale of ambition, risk, and resilience on the American frontier.
The Life Story of Albert Pike chronicles a man who left New England with a fierce will to learn, teach, and lead. From a stubborn start at Harvard’s door to self-made education and a path through the West, this biography reveals how Pike transformed challenge into opportunity. It also situates him among the era’s bold ideas, frontier adventures, and civic duties that shaped the region’s future.
Across its pages you’ll see how Pike balanced intellect, appetite for life, and public influence. The narrative covers his education struggles, his early roles as a teacher and lawyer, and the larger currents that propelled him into politics and public life in the Southwest. It’s a portrait of a man who walked the line between scholarship and daring enterprise, and who used his talents to influence events and institutions of his time.
- Follow Pike’s determined quest to educate himself and earn a place in higher learning.
- Explore his westward adventures, career, and involvement in shaping regional life.
- See how his wit, generosity, and varied roles as writer, lawyer, and public figure intersected with history.
- Understand the context of 19th-century frontier America and the people who defined it.
Ideal for readers of frontier biographies and American history, this edition brings a vivid, accessible look at a complex, influential figure.

Reseña del editor
I have said to you that I very much prefer not to comply with this request, but because both yourself and Mr. Allsopp are so deeply interested in this subject, and because you are both friends of mine, I very reluctantly yield.
After all, what is there to be said in a brief space, of this truly Great Man, great in so many ways, after the very readable and very attractive story contained in this volume?
Surely there is little I might add, beyond expressing my sincere appreciation of the work itself, and that Mr. Allsopp and yourself will give many, very many Masons, throughout the United States, an opportunity of reading much of the history of the Man and Mason so well loved in life, and whose memory is so sincerely and affectionately cherished.
There might be volumes written of the works of General Pike, and then the half would not be told. But it seems to me this Life Story well covers incidents and characteristics of his life, many of which never before have been touched on, that will prove of great interest to all.
