Paperback. "The Life of Richard Rolle: Together With an Edition of His English Lyrics" provides a comprehensive examination of one of the most influential figures in medieval English mysticism. This scholarly work, curated by Frances Margaret Mary Comper, explores the spiritual journey and literary output of Richard Rolle, the hermit of Hampole. The first part of the volume offers a detailed biography, tracing Rolle's transition from an Oxford student to a wandering mystic whose profound spiritual experiences shaped the landscape of fourteenth-century English piety.Complementing the biographical study is a meticulously edited collection of Rolle's English lyrics. These poems serve as a vital link between the vernacular literary traditions of the Middle Ages and the intense emotionality of Rolle's mystical theology. Characterized by themes of divine love and spiritual longing, his verses offer significant insight into the development of the English language and the religious fervor of the period. This volume remains an essential resource for those interested in Middle English literature, church history, and the history of Christian mysticism, capturing the enduring legacy of a man whose writings continue to resonate with themes of spiritual pursuit and divine contemplation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
