Descripción del artículo del vendedor

The Life of Principal Edwards (1934) by T. W. Chance ? Priory Press There are biographies of kings, generals, explorers and people who discovered something important by accident. And then there are biographies of principals. Which suggests a different sort of courage entirely. The Life of Principal Edwards , written by T. W. Chance and published by Priory Press in 1934, is a period biography of a man whose life and work were considered significant enough to deserve a proper printed account at a time when being described as a ?Principal? generally implied rather more dignity, gravity and paperwork than it does today. This is very much a book from the age of serious biography. No sensational subtitle. No ?the untold story? No promise of scandal, betrayal or shocking revelations on page 147. Just a life, carefully considered. Principal Edwards belonged to a world in which education, public service, religion and intellectual life carried a certain formal weight. Institutions mattered. Character mattered. Duty mattered. People wrote letters with proper punctuation and occasionally used the word ?thereupon? without irony. Chance?s account reflects that atmosphere. It is the sort of biography that expects the reader to take an interest in a person?s work, principles, relationships and contribution rather than merely asking whether they once had an embarrassing incident in a hotel. There is something rather appealing about that. Older biographies often have a confidence modern books rarely possess. They do not feel compelled to make every chapter explosive. They simply proceed through a life, recording achievements, struggles, influences and the kind of steady work that rarely gets adapted into a six-part television drama. And yet books like this are often valuable precisely because they preserve people who might otherwise drift into obscurity. Institutions survive. Names on plaques survive. Old photographs survive. But the actual person behind them can easily become little more than a line in an archive. A biography stops that happening. Published in 1934, this volume also carries the particular flavour of interwar publishing: solid, restrained and entirely uninterested in looking fashionable. Which, nearly a century later, makes it rather charming. This is the kind of book that looks as though it belongs in a study with dark furniture, a ticking clock and somebody quietly reading correspondence at a desk. This copy is in Good condition , with fading to the outer parts, including the covers and spine . The fading is noticeable but cosmetic and gives the book exactly the sort of gently weathered appearance one might reasonably expect from a volume now around ninety years old. It has, in other words, aged more visibly on the outside than on the inside. A common human problem. Ideal for collectors of older biographies, institutional history, educational history, religious or social history, or anyone who enjoys rescuing serious old books from the period before every biography needed celebrity endorsement. Also suitable for readers who appreciate the quiet dignity of a book about a life that once mattered deeply to the people who knew it, even if the modern world has mostly moved on. Sold by Crappy Old Books , where distinguished principals, faded spines and forgotten lives are all granted another term. ISBN: None Condition: Good Notes: Fading to the outer parts, including the covers and spine. …
