Print on Demand. This book delves into the life of Philander Chase, the first bishop of Ohio and Illinois, exploring his significant role in establishing the Episcopal Church in the Midwest. It traces Chase's journey from his humble beginnings as the son of a pioneer family in New England to his pivotal work as a missionary and founder of seminaries and colleges, including Kenyon College and Jubilee College. Through Chase's story, the book sheds light on the challenges and triumphs of the Episcopal Church's expansion westward in the early 19th century. The author draws upon Chase's own writings, as well as historical records, to provide a comprehensive account of his life and his contributions to the growth and development of the Episcopal Church. The book's insights into the motivations, struggles, and accomplishments of this remarkable figure make it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of the Episcopal Church, the westward expansion of Christianity, and the life of a pioneering leader who shaped the religious landscape of the United States. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Biography and Autobiography
T is a source of happiness to me in writing this life of Bishop Chase that now, fifty years after his death, his work for the American Church is better known than ever before, his motives vindicated, his judgment approved, and that, in the rushing tide of life in the two great dioceses that he founded, there are some souls wise and honest enough to acknow ledge the value and supremacy of his pioneer work for the Church in the West.

Reseña del editor
It is a source of happiness to me in writing this life of Bishop Chase that now, fifty years after his death, his work for the American Church is better known than ever before, his motives vindicated, his judgment approved, and that, in the rushing tide of life in the two great dioceses that he founded, there are some souls wise and honest enough to acknowledge the value and supremacy of his pioneer work for the Church in the West.
The Rev. Dr. Roberts, in an address before the New Hampshire Historical Society, gives a clear-cut summary of my grandfather's character: "Bishop Philander Chase was a mighty man, a devout Christian, a picturesque character; original, self-willed, of iron determination, extraordinary genius, courage, and industry.
"As soldier or statesman. Philander Chase would have achieved the kind of distinction which makes the names of men of genius household words. As missionary, pioneer, builder of foundations, his name is in a measure shadowed by the superstructure, as the foundations which sustain the monuments of the world are buried out of sight, in the ground. But the greatness of the man and the majesty of his character remain, in spite of his humanness and, in some measure, because of it."
