Paperback. "The Life of George Borrow" offers a comprehensive and authoritative look at one of the most enigmatic and versatile figures of Victorian literature. George Borrow, renowned for his adventurous spirit, linguistic prowess, and unconventional lifestyle, is brought to life through a meticulous compilation of previously unpublished official documents, personal correspondence, and his own extensive literary output. This biography traces Borrow's journey from his early days through his travels across Europe as an agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society, a period that informed his most famous works. Herbert George Jenkins provides a deep exploration of Borrow's complex personality, his fascination with Romani culture, and his significant contributions to travel literature and philology. Readers will gain insight into the man behind "Lavengro" and "The Bible in Spain," discovering how his experiences shaped his unique narrative voice.Rich with archival detail, this work serves as an essential resource for those interested in the history of English literature, the art of travel writing, and the cultural landscape of the 19th century.
