Paperback. Naomi Thompson-Osei has built her whole career on being the one person in the room with nothing to gain from the answer. So when a heritage foundation hires her to assess a derelict bunkhouse on a Manitoba sugar-beet farm, she expects six tidy weeks, a clean report, and a fellowship that finally proves her name means something. She does not expect her own hands to go cold every time she touches something the farm has spent eighty years trying to forget.Ren Tanaka has spent his whole life being the last line of defense for a family history most of Sugarbush would rather not examine too closely. He knows exactly what kind of woman shows up with a clipboard and a predetermined answer already written. He is furious to discover, against every instinct he trusts, that Naomi isn't one of them - and considerably more furious at how fast that discovery is costing him the guarded, single-handed control he's built his whole life around. Then Naomi finds six letters hidden under a bunkhouse floorboard, written by a woman who protected Ren's family at real cost and then spent thirty-three years making sure nobody, including her own descendants, ever had to carry the weight of knowing it. The letters were written by Naomi's own great-grandmother.As the funding behind Naomi's own fellowship turns out to trace straight back to the company trying to tear the bunkhouse down, and a proud man's pride becomes the one thing standing between the truth and its erasure, Naomi has to decide whether the silence she inherited is the same silence she intends to keep. Some debts don't stay buried just because burying them once felt like mercy. A warm, deeply researched small-town Canadian romance about the cost of comfortable silence, the courage it takes to be fully known, and the two people who have to risk everything they've built to finally tell the truth out loud, together. She does not expect her own hands to go cold every time she touches something the farm has spent eighty years trying to forget.
Ren Tanaka has spent his whole life being the last line of defense for a family history most of Sugarbush would rather not examine too closely.
The letters were written by Naomi's own great-grandmother.
As the funding behind Naomi's own fellowship turns out to trace straight back to the company trying to tear the bunkhouse down, and a proud man's pride becomes the one thing standing between the truth and its erasure, Naomi has to decide whether the silence she inherited is the same silence she intends to keep.
Some debts don't stay buried just because burying them once felt like mercy. A warm, deeply researched small-town Canadian romance about the cost of comfortable silence, the courage it takes to be fully known, and the two people who have to risk everything they've built to finally tell the truth out loud, together.

Acerca del autor
About the Author
Felix N.BBA.MA.QA'rb. writes fiction that treats ordinary communities as the site of extraordinary moral weight - small towns and mid-sized cities where a single formula, a single silence, or a single inherited decision turns out to carry the whole history of who a place has chosen to protect and who it has chosen to let go quiet.
Felix's work returns often to the same conviction: that injustice rarely announces itself as villainy. It arrives instead as policy, as process, as the reasonable-sounding choice a frightened, well-intentioned person makes under pressure - and that fiction's job is to make that choice visible again, long after the institutions built on top of it have learned to call it normal.
Felix lives close enough to water to never quite stop thinking about what it remembers.
