Lectures On Chemistry, by William George Hanaford, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of early 19th-century chemical education. This volume, subtitled ’With Familiar Directions for Performing Experiments With a Small Apparatus. to Which Are Added Questions for the Examination of Scholars,’ presents a structured approach to learning chemistry through lectures and hands-on experimentation.

Hanaford’s work is particularly valuable for its emphasis on practical application, providing detailed instructions for conducting experiments with limited resources. The inclusion of questions for scholars highlights the book’s pedagogical intent, making it a unique resource for understanding historical teaching methods in science. This edition revives a significant text for historians of science and educators interested in the evolution of chemical instruction.
