The learners were the easy part. It was everything else that caused the problems.
At thirty, Claire finds herself managing commercial training at Central Midlands College, armed with enthusiasm, a strong belief in organisation and the slightly unfortunate conviction that, with enough planning, almost anything can be fixed.
Education has other ideas.
Alongside her friend and colleague Jackie, Claire navigates the wonderfully unpredictable world of further education, where a perfectly ordinary working day can involve demanding employers, disappearing trainers, temperamental technology, mysterious restructures and courses that somehow bear only a passing resemblance to what the customer thought they had bought.
There are senior construction managers who know considerably more about project management than expected, a jewellery business with its own ideas about spreadsheets, a Functional Skills project involving a cannabis farm, an Ofsted inspection that delivers its most useful feedback in a toilet — and a highly qualified trainer who arrives to deliver a professional management course accompanied by two puppets.
And then there are the emails you desperately wish you could recall.
The Learners Were the Easy Part is a warm, funny and affectionate look back at life behind the scenes in further education, the colleagues, the learners, the friendships and the everyday disasters that rarely make it into the college prospectus.
Because sometimes being good at your job doesn't mean everything goes according to plan.
Sometimes it simply means becoming very good at working out what to do when it doesn't.
