Neuware - 'The Last Years of a Frontier' is a detailed and scholarly examination of the social, military, and political landscape of the Anglo-Scottish Borders during the late sixteenth century. Focused primarily on the reign of Elizabeth I, this work explores the unique and often volatile environment of the Marches, a region characterized by its own distinct laws, customs, and the persistent threat of cross-border raids by the notorious Border Reivers.D. L. W. Tough provides a comprehensive analysis of the administrative challenges faced by the Warders of the Marches and the complex diplomatic relations between the English and Scottish crowns during this transitional era. The book delves into the defensive structures, the economic pressures of frontier life, and the social hierarchies that defined the border communities. By documenting the final decades of this autonomous and warlike frontier before the Union of the Crowns, the work offers invaluable insights into the process of national integration and the pacification of one of Britain's most turbulent regions. It serves as an essential resource for students of British history, military strategy, and the evolution of border societies. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible.
