Paperback. On a gray Monday afternoon in December 1958, children at Our Lady of the Angels School were finishing the last hour of class when smoke began to curl through the corridors. Within minutes, a hidden fire in a basement stairwell turned the school's open passageways into a deadly chimney, trapping students and nuns on the second floor behind a black wall of heat. Ninety-five people would die before the bells stopped ringing. The Our Lady of the Angels Fire tells this catastrophe as lived history: a working-class Catholic neighborhood bound by faith, a school everyone trusted, a building that looked safe until the moment it became a furnace. As confusion spread and alarms failed, teachers faced impossible choices, children crowded at windows twenty-five feet above the pavement, and firefighters and neighbors raced ladders against the smoke. In the ashes, investigators uncovered a more disturbing truth: this was not only a fire, but a disaster built by loopholes, neglect, and warnings ignored. With the pace of a thriller and the discipline of scrupulous reporting, this book restores the human story behind one of the deadliest school fires in American history. It is a haunting account of grief, courage, and accountability - and of how the loss of ninety-two children changed the safety of schools across the nation. Once you begin, you will not look away.
