Paperback. A beautifully curated journey through haunted romance, female longing, ruined beauty, and the early grave-from the poet once known simply as L.E.L.One of the most celebrated and widely read poets of the early nineteenth century, Letitia Elizabeth Landon pioneered a distinctly feminine Romanticism in which beauty and sorrow, passion and abandonment, artistic ambition and early death are inseparably entwined.Hailed in her lifetime as the "female Byron," Landon transformed the language of myth, folklore, and chivalric romance into something darker and more psychological. Her poems give voice to women as artists, lovers, dreamers, prisoners, mourners, legendary heroines, and forgotten ghosts-women whose deepest affections become at once their glory and their undoing.Carefully selected and arranged as a continuous emotional journey, this volume leads the reader from the haunted lives of Sappho and Erinna, through moonlit vows, burning love letters, forsaken lovers, ruined castles, supernatural legends, shipwrecks, early graves, and distant village bells. Alongside beloved shorter lyrics are substantial narrative works including Erinna, The Venetian Bracelet, The Lost Pleiad, and The Fairy of the Fountains. Both an inviting introduction for new readers and a beautiful tribute for longtime admirers, L.E.L.: Poems restores one of Romanticism's most compelling and misunderstood voices to the darkly enchanting world she helped create. A beautifully curated journey through haunted romance, female longing, ruined beauty, and the early grave-from the poet once known simply as L.E.L.
One of the most celebrated and widely read poets of the early nineteenth century, Letitia Elizabeth Landon pioneered a distinctly feminine Romanticism in which beauty and sorrow, passion and abandonment, artistic ambition and early death are inseparably entwined.
Hailed in her lifetime as the "female Byron," Landon transformed the language of myth, folklore, and chivalric romance into something darker and more psychological. Her poems give voice to women as artists, lovers, dreamers, prisoners, mourners, legendary heroines, and forgotten ghosts-women whose deepest affections become at once their glory and their undoing.
Carefully selected and arranged as a continuous emotional journey, this volume leads the reader from the haunted lives of Sappho and Erinna, through moonlit vows, burning love letters, forsaken lovers, ruined castles, supernatural legends, shipwrecks, early graves, and distant village bells.
