Paperback. From the battlefields of the Crusades to the halls of kings and popes, the dramatic rise and fall of the Knights Templar unfolds in this classic historical study. In The Knights Templars by C. G. Addison, the history of one of the most powerful and controversial military-religious orders of the Middle Ages is explored in vivid detail. Founded in the aftermath of the First Crusade to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem, the Knights Templar grew from a small brotherhood of warrior-monks into a vast international order feared for its military strength and respected for its discipline, wealth, and influence. Tracing the Templars through the Crusades, the defense of the Holy Land, and the expansion of their fortresses and influence across Europe, Addison examines the ideals, conflicts, and political forces that shaped the order's history. The book also explores the growing suspicions surrounding the Templars, including accusations of secrecy and corruption that eventually led to their persecution and destruction under King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V. Drawing upon historical records, medieval traditions, and surviving monuments associated with the order, Addison presents both the military achievements and the tragic downfall of the Templars while challenging many popular misconceptions surrounding them. Castles, crusades, religious devotion, political intrigue, and betrayal combine in a sweeping account of one of history's most enduring and mysterious brotherhoods. Rich in historical atmosphere and nineteenth-century scholarship, The Knights Templars remains a compelling introduction to the legends, controversies, and historical legacy of the famous warrior-monks of the Crusades.
