For over 70 years, this single textbook trained 80 million Soviet students in mathematics. Generations of scientists, engineers, and Fields Medal winners learned arithmetic from these pages. Now, for the first time, the complete English translation is available.

Originally published in 1884 by Andrey Kiselev, this legendary textbook became the standard mathematics text across the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. It remained in continuous classroom use until 1955 — one of the longest runs of any textbook in history.

What makes Kiselev's Arithmetic different from every modern textbook:

Every rule comes with a proof. Where modern textbooks say "memorize this," Kiselev says "here is why it works — and you are 10 years old, so you can handle the proof." Students don't just learn that a number is divisible by 3 when its digits sum to a multiple of 3. They learn WHY.

Euclid's proof of infinite primes — in an elementary textbook. Most American students don't encounter this proof until college. Kiselev presents it to children, building mathematical reasoning from the ground up.

Limits of sequences — in an arithmetic book. Kiselev introduces the concept of a limit and uses it to prove that repeating decimals converge to specific fractions. This is mathematical rigor typically reserved for calculus courses.

191 pages. 214 sections. 7 parts covering: whole numbers, divisibility, fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, limits, and word problems.

This is a faithful translation from the Russian — no adaptation, no simplification. Section numbering, worked examples, and proofs follow the source edition used in Soviet classrooms.

Pair with the companion problem book. Berezanskaya's Arithmetic — Problems and Exercises (first complete English edition) is the classical Soviet problem collection published as the exercise companion to Kiselev's Arithmetic. Chapter-aligned to Kiselev's exposition, it turned the same generations of Soviet schoolchildren from readers into fluent problem-solvers.

Continue with Kiselev's Algebra, Part I — the natural next step in the same author's mathematical canon, now available in the same English edition.

Ideal for: homeschool families seeking a rigorous arithmetic curriculum, parents supplementing their children's math education, math teachers looking for a proof-based approach, adults who want to rebuild their mathematical foundations, and anyone interested in the tradition that produced some of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.

Part of Russian Math Classics — English Editions. Translated by Valery Manokhin, PhD (Royal Holloway, University of London). Published by Northern Star Academic Press. Full catalogue at russianmathbooks.com.

Descripción de la tienda

We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
