But Francisco was a man whom no chain could hold for long. Following the whisper of a "Decree of Sanctuary" issued by the Spanish Crown—which promised freedom to those who fled British slavery and pledged loyalty to a different flag—he embarked on a harrowing seventy-two-hour flight through the treacherous, alligator-infested swamps of Georgia. He didn’t just run toward a border; he ran toward his destiny as the patriarch of a free people.
The Kingdom: Sovereignty and Steel In 1738, under the Spanish flag, Fort Mose was born. It was a kingdom carved out of mud and determination, led by Menéndez as the Captain of the Free Pardo Militia. Here, former runaways became elite soldiers, defending their homes with Spanish steel and African strategic genius. They built a community with a stone-footing chapel, a school, and a sense of dignity that the British colonies sought to extinguish.
The climax of their struggle arrived on a bloody June dawn in 1740. When an English army led by General Oglethorpe sought to re-enslave them, the Black Militia of Mose didn't retreat. They fought with a ferocity that turned the "Frontier of Fire" into a graveyard for the invaders. Their battle cry wasn't for a distant king; it was for their families, their land, and the word they shouted three times into the smoke: "MOSE! MOSE! MOSE!".
A Testament to Black Excellence "KINGDOM OF THE RUNAWAYS" challenges every traditional narrative of the colonial era. We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
