Paperback. "Juvenal and Persius" presents a comprehensive collection of the works of two of the most influential satirists in Roman history. This volume captures the biting wit and moral intensity of Juvenal, whose sixteen satires provide a vivid, often scathing, critique of Roman life, corruption, and social decay during the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Juvenal's mastery of the hexameter and his profound influence on Western literature are evident in his sharp observations of human vice and folly.Complementing Juvenal's work are the satires of Persius, a Stoic poet known for his intellectual depth and moral earnestness. Persius's contributions, though fewer in number, offer a rigorous exploration of ethical philosophy and personal integrity, presented through complex and highly polished verse. Together, these authors offer an essential window into the literary culture and social tensions of Imperial Rome. This translation serves as an invaluable resource for students of classics and readers interested in the evolution of satire as a literary form, preserving the power and relevance of these ancient voices for a contemporary audience. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
