"Journal of First Voyage to America" presents the foundational document of European exploration in the Western Hemisphere. This daily log, kept by Christopher Columbus during his monumental 1492 expedition, serves as a direct window into the first encounters between the Old and New Worlds. The narrative spans from the initial departure from Spain across the vast, unknown reaches of the Atlantic to the sighting of land in the Caribbean.
Throughout the journal, the reader experiences the mounting tensions of the crew, the technical challenges of 15th-century navigation, and the vivid descriptions of the flora, fauna, and peoples encountered in the islands. Columbus's observations reflect the ambitions and misconceptions of his era, providing a raw and unvarnished look at the motivations behind the search for a westward passage to the Indies. With an introduction by the distinguished historian Van Wyck Brooks, this work is not only a crucial historical record but also a compelling travel narrative that captures the wonder and gravity of a turning point in human history. "Journal of First Voyage to America" remains a vital text for students of history, maritime enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the origins of the modern world.
