Two volume set. Duodecimo, hardcover (stiff boards), ads, 6 pp + tissue-protected frontis., xii, 384 pp, fold-out map; tissue-protected frontis., 337 pp + [ii] pp ads. Poor; both books missing spines (though backplates remain, keeping the binding tight; foxing (age darkened spotting) throughout, including to the fold-out maps of early 19th century Africa. Richard and John Lander proved to Europe, through their exploration and subsequently published narrative, that the River Niger emptied into the Atlantic Ocean. The reached the Atlantic via the Brass and Nun rivers in the Niger Delta, confirming the river's true mouth, which opened central Africa to European trade routes and maritime navigation. This detailed report of this journey includes details of a complex geopolitical landscape of powerful West African states and highly structured trade networks.
