Excerpt from Jose Policarpo Rodriguez, the Old Guide, 1898: Surveyor, Scout, Hunter, Indian Fighter, Ranchman, Preacher; His Life in His Own Words>Many of my friends have asked me to tell the story of my life, and I have consented to do so in the hope that it may prove interesting to them and not entirely valueless for other reasons. It deals with conditions that have passed away, but which were thrilling and important in the early history of Texas. I have lived in Texas when it was a part of Mexico, when it was an independent republic, while it was one of the Confederate States, and hope to lay my body to rest in its soil in sight of Polly's Peak when my journey is ended. This memoir, Jose Policarpo Rodriguez, the Old Guide, invites readers into the varied life of a man who wore many hats—surveyor, scout, hunter, Indian fighter, ranchman, and preacher. From early schooling and an apprenticeship in gunsmithing to working with government surveys and leading routes through rough country, the book pairs vivid memory with personal philosophy. Through peril, close calls with Indians, and moments of faith, the narrative frames a life spent navigating danger, loyalty, and the call to preach.
- Experience the realities of surveying life and frontier travel in difficult terrain
- Share in dramatic hunts, close encounters with wildlife, and tests of courage
- Witness a transformation into a preacher who uses practical kindness and medicine to reach people
- See daily life on the march, in camps, and among towns along the frontier
Ideal for readers of frontier memoirs, historical biographies, and first-person accounts of life on the American frontier.
