This richly detailed portrait follows John Mac Gregor from his early work with ragged schools to his rise as a celebrated figure in open-air missions, law, invention, and popular lecturing. Drawing on diaries, public service, and notable journeys, the book portrays a man whose energy touched education, philanthropy, and the volunteer movement in London and beyond.
The narrative traces his diverse interests—from patent law and steam propulsion to adventurous voyages and canoeing feats—while grounding his character in daily discipline, leadership, and a keen sense of public service. Readers will encounter the real people, places, and events that shaped his remarkable life and the era he helped define.
- Shows how a single, determined individual influenced education reform, open-air work, and the humanitarian movement.
- Explores his role in founding and leading volunteer companies, including the London Scottish.
- Highlights his travels, writings, and public lectures that linked science, religion, and social reform.
- Offers a window into 19th-century London, its social challenges, and the spirit of volunteerism.
Ideal for readers of biographical works that blend lived experience with public impact, and for those curious about Victorian reform, philanthropy, and the early open-air movement.

Reseña del editor
My object throughout the following pages has been to draw a true portrait of a Man who exercised a wide and still-spreading influence by his courage, per severance, reverence, and buoyant hopefulness; whose character may be summed up in one word - Manli ness, in the fullest, freest sense - physical, moral, and spiritual.
Wherever possible I have left him to speak for himself, quoting freely from his diaries, correspondence, and writings.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
