Since its inception in 1947, the Ancient Christian Writers series has become one of the world's premier patristic collections. Founded by the renowned scholars Johannes Quasten and Joseph Plumpe at The Catholic University of America, the series has grown to fifty-seven volumes over fifty years. Translations of the works of Augustine, Basil, Theodoret, Palladius, Chrysostom, Tertullian and, most recently, Justin Martyr are found amongst the thirty-six authors whose writings comprise the series. Widely recognized as the authoritative American patristic project, the Ancient Christian Writers series launches its second fifty years with the long-anticipated publication of John Cassian's The Conferences, translated and presented by Boniface Ramsey, O.P. The first complete translation into English of The Conferences, Ramsey's rendering of Cassian is the only extensively annotated edition since the seventeenth century. Included are introductory essays, notes and a useful series of indexes. Popular for centuries in both the East and West, this work will now be available to a wider audience of scholars, students and spiritual seekers.
Anticipated in the next two years are John Cassian's The Institutes (completing the publication of his monastic and ascetical writings in the Ancient Christian Writers series), never-before-published correspondence of Popes Damasus and Liberius, as well as the catechumenate sermons of the North African, Quodvultdeus. As always, each volume will present the reader with a high quality English translation, notes and a scholarly introduction. The Ancient Christian Writers series is currently edited by well-known scholar and homilist Walter J. Burghardt, S.J., John Dillon of Washington, D.C. and Dennis McManus of Paulist Press.

Reseña del editor: Long awaited by medievalists, monastics and patristic scholars, these are the complete conferences of Cassian. Cassian was a major spiritual writer, a precursor of Benedict, and a bridge between the desert and the West. The conferences are a record of these dialogues and focus on the cultivation of virtue and purity of heart. Annotations include scholarly addenda, notes textual reference, commentaries on the text, and an index.

Hardcover. Condición: As New. No Jacket. John Cassian (360-430) traveled to Egypt and sat at the feet of the Fathers, eventually structuring his writings around the question-and-answer sessions he had with them on topics ranging from prayer to fasting to friendship. Boniface Ramsey's preface details how Cassian's Institutes proved in time to be merely the preface to Cassian's much more extensive teaching here in the Conferences. Written in dialogue form, the instruction of such renowned Abbas as Moses, Paphnutios, Daniel, Serapion, and Theodore are presented on spiritual concerns such as chastity, discernment, friendship, silence, and ultimately what Cassian calls ''perfect prayer,'' the prayer of stillness or the prayer of fire. The famous thirteenth Conference contains Cassian's teaching on grace and free will, offered explicitly to temper Augustine's views on the subject. Cassian was sainted in the East but not in the West, perhaps because of his opposition to Augustine. The Conferences nevertheless became the basis for the Rule of St. Benedict and through that entered the bloodstream of Western civilization. 886 pp. These books were ordered new from the publisher but arrived with some printing defects. There are scuffs around the cover edges and cover ink has rubbed off in some places. Some of the ink has stained parts of the text block. The text itself is pristine and the binding firm.
