Paperback. Every day, thousands of aircraft crisscross the sky at hundreds of miles an hour, packed into the same crowded airspace above our busiest cities-and almost none of them ever come close to one another. How is that possible? The answer is a vast, invisible system of highways, altitudes, and rules that structures the empty air overhead, and a global network of controllers whose job is to keep every plane safely apart. In this vivid, accessible book, Edward Callenford takes you inside the world of air traffic control: the airways and flight levels that turn open sky into an ordered grid, the leap from spinning radar dishes to satellite tracking, the controllers watching over their sectors, and the separation rules and conflict alerts that catch trouble before it happens. From the packed skies over New York and London to the moments when the system is pushed to its limits, every idea is grounded in how the machinery and the people actually work.Featuring twenty-four original diagrams that make invisible routes and split-second decisions easy to follow, this is a book for travelers, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever looked up at a contrail and wondered how the sky stays safe. You will never board a flight the same way again. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.…
