Print on Demand. This book examines a neglected field of history: the constitutional and political history of the individual states, focusing mainly on the period from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, with particular attention to the state constitutions framed during this time. The author argues these state histories possess as much importance as national history, as evidenced in the significant, yet often unrecognized, influence of the state governments on the life of the national constitution. Furthermore, the author contends that a truer understanding of our national story cannot be reached without knowledge of its component parts. The author maintains that studying state history texts, which are frequently over-stuffed with detail but scant on genesis-related information, will not rectify this knowledge gap. Instead, the author suggests investigating a wide range of sources, including county and town records, private correspondence, and newspapers, to uncover the realities of the political history of average citizens. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Reseña del editor
Three years ago, when I first visited the library of the Department of State at Washington, the Constitution of the United States was kept folded up in a little tin box in the lower part of a closet, while the Declaration of Independence, mounted with all elegance, was exposed to the view of all in the central room of the library. It was evident that the former document was an object of interest to very few of the visitors of Washington. But when I was last in the library, I learned that the Constitution also was being mounted in order to be similarly placed upon exhibition, because, as I understood it, there was a more general desire to see it. It seemed to me that this incident is typical of a considerable change which the last few years have seen in our way of looking at American history.
