Chapter One
GLORY YEARS FOR THE REPUBLICI consider the high-water mark of the American Republic to be the years 1940 through 1960, a plateau to be the years 1960 through 1963, and a decline from 1964 to present. For most of the declining years, it has been an arithmetic decline, but starting in the early 1990s, the decline became nearly logarithmic. At the Republic's high-water mark, it was solvent, a benefactor of the world, secure and confident of its future. These were glory years for the country and most of its citizens. Days of wine and roses.
Although all radicals and many liberals despise scientists and their efforts, it is the only sector of our society that has progressed for the better in the past five to five and a half decades. Sure there have been missteps, mostly, in my opinion, due to human error. Concrete progress in all scientific and technology areas, from medicine, to automobiles, to communication, to information processing, to housing, to food, to the environment, can be seen all around.
Not so in our social/civic/personal/government/legal/education institutions. In fact, every one of these endeavors, where the human element is the only or the predominant player, has deteriorated to disaster proportions. Advances in the sciences and in technology are the product of analytical thinking and reason, two items in short supply in a liberal. Take our public school systems. From Chicago to New Orleans to Los Angeles to New York, our public education systems are disaster areas. Certainly they are no match for the schools prior to 1960, when our education system was the envy of the world.
Even with tossing out the old IQ test as "not relevant" and the successive watering down of replacement examinations, the educators still can't get the students to perform. Some colleges do not require a SAT, and there is even talk of doing away with the SAT altogether. This thinking has exacerbated the weak links of what was once a great educational system, plunging it into failure. Do I feel bad for the adults that have facilitated this failure? Not on your life.. It's the children and the country that I feel sorry for.
Even with teaching the test and lax test environments, lowered passing grade, et cetera, et cetera, test scores continue to fall. The students would be far, far better off if they took twice as long, and schools just kept them in first grade until they learned the material. Self-esteem is acquired by learning, not by being passed on unprepared.
Finally, I believe nothing put out by the educators. Over the years they have proven themselves untrustworthy. In a recent period of about ten days, my locally distributed newspapers reported that grades had improved, slightly. A few days later, the papers reported that national test scores were down—again.
To highlight another failure, one only has to consider what has happened to the judicial system. Any resulting justice in a courtroom today is purely accidental. Today the "judicial branch of the government" is actually only a hollow system. There was a day when I would have trusted my life to a jury of twelve peers. Today, I would trust nothing to a jury. Think about it for a minute. In the courtroom a witness swears to "tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." Not so for judges or lawyers. A lawyer can lie in court. Think of the significance of that. And, of course, they do lie, they mislead, and they manipulate. It is hardly necessary to note that with a few exceptions, all judges are lawyers.
Recently there was an obituary in the newspaper that printed a picture of an aged lady, as well as a picture of her when she was perhaps twenty-five or thirty years old. She was born in 1921, and age had taken a heavy toll on her outward appearance. In the younger photo, she was a beautiful woman in full bloom. An analogy is there with this country. At the time of that younger photo (1940–1951), this country was in full flower: respected by the world, wealthy, almost unlimited industrial capacity, the best vehicles (and best looking) in the world, a united population, stable energy prices. The price of a gallon of gasoline could go for years with only a few cents worth of change, and this was sometimes due to a local "gas war." Millions from the world over wanted to come to the U.S. Of course, millions still do, but in those days it was to seek opportunity. Today it is to get on the welfare gravy train.
We were a civilized and safe society then. There were hardly any streets in the entire country where one would have felt unsafe alone at night. This was certainly true when I was a student at Central High School. Anywhere in the city anytime, no problem. In that day, it was not unusual to leave the family home and the family car unlocked. Sometimes the keys were even left in the family vehicle. More than once in college, I took my girlfriend downtown to the movies (when there was still a downtown) and left the top down on my car while we were at the movie, no problem. Contrast that with the ugliness and evils of today's situation in any and all areas.
The reader is left to do his own fact finding on the many aspects of life in this country, except for one, which I will cover here. That area is safety. In this country today, you are not safe anywhere or anytime. Not in your home, not in your car, not in the heart of town, not at the local fast-food shop, not at school, not at work, not in church, not in the hospital, not in the grocery-store parking lot, not on the interstate, not in the courtroom, not in the park, not on a military base, not even stopping at a local convenience store to ask directions to the football stadium. This past fall a man and his wife drove in from out of town to see their grandson play football. When they stopped to ask for directions, the man was shot in the head and killed during an attempted robbery, with his terrified wife on the car seat beside him. These criminals today are so bold, so aggressive, so stupid, and so confident of either not getting caught or beating the rap, the mall parking lot at high noon is fine with them. Would you like to know why this man was shot dead? The male who shot him wanted money to go to the fair.
At this point it must be noted that the males involved in this killing were all minorities. The paper distributed in this area contained an article today about the trial of one of the suspects. The paper reported that as the widow of the slain man entered the courtroom, she encountered insults from the friends and family of the minority male on trial. The article reported that one man addressed the widow with a "screw you," and a woman said, "This court's a [expletive deleted] joke." Now this is in the courtroom, and if anyone did anything to address that awful conduct, the paper did not report it. In a civilized society, one would have expected those people to show some sympathy or remorse for this tragedy, but not these people. I would describe their comments as "hate speech," if there were ever any validity to that term. No one arrested them for their crude and insulting behavior. (More on this subject later.) Recall this conduct and these words when you read the pieces on simple "politically correct" speech, and compare the consequences of "politically correct" with hate/ crude/insulting speech in a courtroom. It is totally dependent on whether or not one is a "protected" species. No mass media outcry here. According to a later article, this crowd got so rowdy during the trial, the judge had to threaten to clear the courtroom.
A democrat would never understand my dad. My dad died in the mid 1950s of a heart attack at the now young age of fifty-seven. He was a college graduate, class of 1923. He never owned an air-conditioned house or car. Both of these innovations were in their infancy at that time of his death. Still, could he be here today, he would rapidly understand the scientific and technological advances of the past fifty-three years. However, he would never understand the people and the society we have become. Frankly, his son is here today, and he doesn't understand it.
REAL POVERTY
In recent years the government has made a big deal out of "poor" people (read, "potential vote"), a war on poverty, arbitrary poverty levels assigned by the government, subsidized housing, medical care, food stamps (now called an EBT card and looks like a credit card), Social Security for people who never paid into system, aid to dependent children, subsidized housing, subsidized utilities, day care, free transportation, preferential job and school treatment, et cetera. Probably no one really knows how many programs there are out there created solely to help the so-called poor and minorities. For the total, one must count the numerous non-government "charity" organizations also. Has it done any good? It most certainly has, no question about it. Now they can drive to the grocery store to use their EBT cards in nice-looking air-conditioned vehicle, with multiple rings on their fingers and dressed as well or better than the cash customers. In fact, most of the people that support those giveaway programs have never seen real poverty eyeball to eyeball. Allow me to relate a short story that will paint a vivid picture of honest, hard-core poverty.
In 1940 my dad, who was with the Corps of Engineers, was sent out west to survey for a dam and airfield runway extensions. Although we had been in a new home for less than a year in the east-central part of Mississippi, we moved into my great-grandfather's house on the property next to my grandparents. The property was located about three miles outside a small town in rural Mississippi. Of course, in those days the entire state was only a stone's throw from rural. So we spent the school year there while Dad was on his assignment in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
The event that I shall always remember, and that I cannot tell without shedding a tear even today, took place as I recall in January 1941, when I was one month into my ninth year. It was a bitterly cold, overcast day. My grandfather had two tenant houses on the property; one down the hill near the creek, and one in a field behind the house. At that time, the second house had a family of five living in it—a man, his wife, and three children. The oldest boy was my age.
In those days help to the poor, and these people were poor, consisted of "commodities," which I believe they could draw once per month. Commodities consisted of cheese, fatback, powdered milk, butter, and not much else. One could use fatback to cook with, and to make lard and pork rinds. This stuff had to be picked up in the nearest town, which was about three miles away. Now my grandfather had a fairly new black two-door 1940 Pontiac. No radio, just plain dependable transportation. I'm sure the man of the tenant family never thought to ask my grandfather to give them a ride into town, and I did not see them when they came around the house on their walk into town. But on their return, I saw them as they topped the hill in front of the house and headed toward the tenant house to the rear. I was standing in my grandmother's front room with a roaring fire in the fireplace. As I looked out the front window to the road, I saw it had begun to sleet lightly. Little puddles were collecting in low spots on the front lawn. What struck me and will always live with me was that as the family walked by carrying their few commodities, I noticed the little boy my age. He was barefoot. That, people, is poverty, and it did not need a government agency to define it. It spoke for itself.
Now before you liberals get your drawers wrapped around your outrage, permit me to point out that these tenants were white people. I never knew my grandfather to have anything but white sharecroppers.
RIGHTS VS. RESPONSIBILITIES
The following is a true story not known to everyone because the democrat or media would never pass it on. At one time Gandhi was approached by the author of a new book with a request that Gandhi endorse it in some way. The name of the book, as I recall, was The Rights of Man. Gandhi refused his request, correctly observing that there is no way one can write of the rights of man without concurrently writing of the responsibilities or duties of man. Now a democrat is fully informed on the former and totally ignorant of the latter; and this lacking accounts in large part for the democrats' many failings.
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
Contributing to the national decline not in an insignificant way is political correctness. Although PC is a relatively recent negative factor, it is nevertheless a dangerous practice. Under this code a person cannot call a pig a pig, he cannot tell his favorite Polish joke, he cannot joke about a foreign "religion," but he can of course joke about Christianity or Christians. In short, he is denied freedom of speech. He is denied his free speech not because he is necessarily afraid of offending someone, but because he may be slapped with a federal charge or fired from his job or assaulted. PC comes about because some segments of our population do not want to hear comments about themselves, their conduct, manners, appearance, or dress. Generally, the media support their position, and an offender is crucified, fired, demoted, or whatever as punishment. This is not about someone lying, or the truth, or at least someone's opinion of the truth. Thus, in the end a person is denied his freedom of speech, because some segment of the population doesn't want to hear it—and is supported by the media. In fact, the media make political correctness possible. For without the big mouth of the media, the offending word or event would vanish like fog in a hot sun.
The scope of political correctness is not limited to speech. It extends to conduct, appearance, and even business. And it is so powerful that businesses that have for years capitalized on the Christmas trade now boycott Christmas. This does not come about for no reason. It happens because not every customer is a Christian, and recognizing Christmas could perhaps offend someone. Now the store is still looking to benefit from all those Christian dollars that do come in. They are not about to reject those. What I object to is not so much that companies refuses to recognize Christmas, as their reason for the action. They caved in to blackmail in the form of political correctness. A governor in one state put up a Christmas tree in the governor's mansion, only it was not a Christmas tree. He called it a holiday tree. Again, intimidation by political correctness. People, you need to be aware of the vastness of political correctness and its negative impact on our country.
Political correctness in an invention of the latter part of the twentieth century. It was and is an evil and oppressive invention. Political correctness is intended to deny freedom of speech, to intimidate, and to punish offenders. Political correctness is not a law enacted by Congress. It is not the result of a Supreme Court decision (although the courts are clearly sympathetic to its practice and purposes).
Political correctness is almost exclusively a baby birthed by the mass media (television) in support of some cause, person, or group, for they can instantly call for a lynching or give someone a pass. Except for one cable television network (Fox), the television news media march in lock step. If one gives a person a pass, they all give him a pass. If one lynches the target, they all applaud the lynching and join in.
Intimidation by political correctness works along these lines. Should someone without thinking of the retaliation call a pig a pig, or with forethought, say to himself, "Hey, that is a pig, and by golly I'm going to call it a pig"; the immediate response is not to clean up the pig, but to respond with "racist," "bigot," "lunatic fringe," "redneck," et cetera. That signals to the media that you did not like the guy calling your pig a pig, and depending on who you are (Republicans or Independents need not apply), the mass media will pick up the chant and drive it home. Clearly it doesn't matter in the least if the pig is a pig. What matters is that someone wanted to suppress free speech and free thought in order to prevent others from telling the truth about you or your interests. After all, if enough people called your pig a pig, the rest of the country might join in and say, "Why, of course that is a pig. It's as plain as the nose on your face."
