Famous Catechism of father Patrick, a native of Montpellier. La Fontaine says that he owes the latter his conversion. The work was translated into all the languages of Europe and even in Chinese. The Spanish translation was banned by the Roman Inquisition. Charles-Joachim Colbert Croissy is the second son of Charles Colbert de Croissy, marquis of Croissy, intendant of Alsace, Ambassador in London, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of State, and his wife, Marguerite Béraud. He is the nephew of Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Ordained a priest on 22 December 1691, general agent of the clergy of France in 1693, he is nominated as soon as November 2, 1696 and confirmed Bishop of Montpellier on January 14, 1697. He ordered the writing of Catechism of Montpellier by Fr. François-Aimé Pouget. He is an ardent Jansenist. His writings are condemned in Rome.
