This Louisiana-bred baritone became a noted singer around the turn of the century as well as an educator and composer of such songs as "Forever and a Day" (1905); he was the highest paid choral conductor in the United states, leading such groups as the Boston Symphony ORchestra Chorus; in 1984 a biography of him was published. Spectacular oversize IPS, 10½" X 14", n.p., 1925. Very good. Bit of inoffensive ¼" damage at upper right edge, running down 2", but well outside the outer printed border and easily matted out. Striking and dramatic reproduction of a head-and-shoulders pencil portrait by a W. Strasser of an older Townsend in suit and tie, signed and inscribed huge and bold in brown ink just below his image: "To Richard Copley / with the best regards of / Stephen S. Townsend / 1925." Copley (1876-1939) was a well-known New York concert manager. Unusual and quite handsome. N° de ref. de la librería 37107
