Neuware - Few institutions in European history have generated as much controversy, fear, and mythology as the Inquisition. For centuries, stories of secret tribunals, torture, heresy, and religious persecution have shaped popular perceptions of one of the most complex institutions of medieval and early modern Europe. The Inquisition: Structure, Methods, and the Truth Behind the Legend examines the historical reality behind the Inquisition, separating documented evidence from later myths and popular representations. The book explores the origins of inquisitorial institutions, their organization, legal procedures, relationship with secular authorities, and changing role within Christian Europe. Readers will discover how inquisitors investigated accusations, collected testimony, conducted trials, and determined punishments, as well as how different inquisitions operated in different regions and historical periods.Particular attention is given to the Spanish Inquisition, the Roman Inquisition, medieval inquisitorial courts, the treatment of heresy, and the role of censorship and religious conformity. The book also examines the use of torture, putting the practice within its broader European legal context rather than treating it as an isolated phenomenon.Beyond the most familiar stories, this guide considers the surviving historical records and explains why the popular image of the Inquisition is sometimes dramatically different from the documentary evidence. The result is a balanced exploration of an institution whose history cannot be understood through either sensationalism or simple dismissal. For readers interested in medieval history, religious history, the Spanish Inquisition, law, and the darker chapters of European civilization, The Inquisition offers an accessible introduction to the people, institutions, procedures, and controversies behind the legend.…
