Independent journalism calls a faith community to its real fundamentals, to its mission and purpose in Christ. It puts the practical issues of the moment into the larger context of God’s purpose for His people; the expectations that the example and teaching of Jesus set before the church. It gets beyond promotion of organizational goals and seeking to create an attractive institutional image. It reports bad news along with the good in order to help the fellowship of believers understand the reality of their situation and hold one another accountable to our Lord and Savior, and His mission on Earth. This is the kind of journalism that David Neff has practiced and believes in. David Neff served on the editorial staff at Christianity Today, the largest circulation religious periodical in the United States from 1985 to 2013, serving the last decade as the chief editor. Because of his stature in faith-based journalism and his Adventist roots, the Adventist Today Foundation invited him to speak during its 25th Anniversary celebration on Sabbath afternoon, April 21, 2018. The lecture was provided the basis for a chapter in this volume. Neff believes strongly in the need for independent journalism in faith communities. He wrote in a 2008 article in Christian History how the printed word has been a key part of his own spiritual growth and is part of his hopes for his readers. “There were several doors into my new experience: C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity was one, as was John R. W. Stott’s Basic Christianity. Much less celebrated, but equally important to me, was J. I. Packer’s I Want to Be a Christian (later renamed Growing in Christ).”
