Excerpt from Humus and Humus-Nitrogen in California Soil Columns
With ordinary green-manure crops and under field conditions it will probably require a much larger amount of green material to produce one part of humus, for there are losses from the incomplete turning-under of the material and the drying-out of the soil.
It would naturally be supposed that as humus is formed by the decay of roots, leaves, etc., it would be found only where formed, whereas on the contrary, we find it quite evenly diffused through the surface soil; this even distribution is not easily accounted for without some outside agencies. Professor Hilgard, in discussing the subject,3 attributes it chiefly to the action of fungi, insects, and earthworms.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. Delving into the depths of California's soils, this book offers an in-depth examination of the composition and characteristics of soil columns across varied agricultural regions. The author takes a historical approach to the study of soil science in the state, analyzing data collected since the establishment of the University of California. The book's unique value lies in its focus on the distribution of humus and nitrogen content in soil layers up to twelve feet deep, a significant departure from previous research that primarily examined surface soils. Through meticulous analysis of soil columns, the author presents novel insights into the complex relationship between humus, nitrogen, and soil fertility. This comprehensive analysis provides crucial information for farmers, soil scientists, and environmentalists seeking to optimize soil health and agricultural productivity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
