Human Factors in Intelligent Vehicles (River Publishers Series in Transport Technology)

Human Factors in Intelligent Vehicles addresses issues related to the analysis of human factors in the design and evaluation of intelligent vehicles for a wide spectrum of applications and over different dimensions. To commemorate the 8th anniversary of the IEEE ITS Workshop on Human Factors (http://hfiv.net) some recent works of authors active in the automotive human factors community have been collected in this book.

Enclosed here are extended versions of papers and tutorials that were presented at the IEEE ITSS Workshop on “Human Factors in Intelligent Vehicles” and also included is additional deeper analysis along with detailed experimental and simulation results.

The contributors cover autonomous vehicles as well as the frameworks for analyzing automation, modelling and methods for road users’ interaction such as intelligent user interfaces, including brain-computer interfaces and simulation and analysis tools related to human factors.

Prof. Dr. Cristina Olaverri-Monreal graduated with a Master's degree in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science and Phonetics from the Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich and received her PhD in cooperation with BMW. After working for several years internationally in the industry and academia, she currently holds a position as full professor and BMK-endowed chair of sustainable transport logistics 4.0 at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, in Austria. Her research aims at studying solutions for efficient and effective transportation, focusing on minimizing the barrier between users and road systems. To this end, she relies on the automation, wireless communication and sensing technologies that pertain to the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Dr. Olaverri is Vice-president of Educational Activities in the IEEE ITS Society Executive Committee, chair of the IEEE ITS Austrian Chapter and chair of the Technical Activities Committee (TAC) on Human Factors in ITS. This TAC was recognized with the Award "best TAC of the IEEE ITSS" in 2018 and 2019 respectively. In addition, she serves as an associate editor and editorial board member of several journals in the field, including the "IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems" and "IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Mag- azine (ITSM)". She was recently recognized for her dedicated contribution to continuing education in the field of ITS with the 2017 IEEE Educational Activities Board Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education.

Dr.Fernando García-Fernández is Associate Professor at Universidad Car- los III de Madrid where he focuses his researches in Intelligent Vehicles and Intelligent Transportation Systems involving the use of Computer Vision, Sensor Fusion, and Human Factors.During his professional career, he has pursued research excellence by promoting quality research that has led him to achieve important milestones as a researcher, in addition to several awards. His research activity has resulted in publishing more than 80 papers and 4 industrial patents and the opportunity to work in more than 50 projects with internationally recognized industrial and academic partners.His research activity has allowed him to gain recognition in IEEE Intelligent Transporta- tion Systems Society, where he has been serving in the Board of Governors since 2017 (re-elected in 2020). Besides he has taken a role of the General Chair at some conferences of the mentioned society, as well as the Organizer of the flagship conferences of this society (Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, IV and Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference, ITSC). He is also acting as an editor in the IEEE-Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine and have served as a guest editor of the reputed journals such as: Journal of Advanced Transportation and Applied Sciences.As lecturer, he has given visiting lectures in different international universities such as University of Buffalo, Universita` degli Studi di Parma, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana de Medellin, Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas de Quito (ESPE), Universi- dad de La Salle at Bogota ́, and Universidad Polite ́cnica de Madrid. Moreover, he gives lectures at his host University in Programming, Computer Vision, Data Fusion, Intelligent Transportation Systems and Control Engineering.

Dr. Rosaldo J. F. Rossetti is a senior research fellow and member of the directive board of the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Lab, and a faculty member of the executive committee of the Department of Informatics Engineering, at the University of Porto, Portugal. Dr Rossetti served as an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE ITS Society during term 2011-2013, and was a member of the steering committee of the IEEE Smart Cities Initiative from 2013 to 2017. He is currently chair of the Artificial Transportation Systems and Simulation Technical Activities Committee of the IEEE ITS Society, for which he was the recipient of the Best Technical Activity Sub-committee of the IEEE ITS Society Award, in 2017. He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Trans- portation Systems, and the ITS Department editor of the IEEE Intelligent System Magazine. Besides being a member of IEEE, he is also a member of ACM and of APPIA (the Portuguese AI Society). Dr Rossetti's main research interests include behavioural modelling, social simulation, spatio- temporal data analytics, and machine learning. He focuses on applications of multiagent systems as a modelling metaphor to address issues in artificial transportation systems and simulation, future mobility paradigms and urban smartification, and explores the potential uses of serious games and gamifica- tion in transportation and mobility systems. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from INF-UFRGS, Brazil (2002), having carried out his doctoral research at Leeds University's Institute for Transport Studies, UK.
