Jim Al-Khalili earned his Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics from the University of Surrey. He has been a SERC Postdoctoral Fellow at University College, London, an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, and Fellow of the Institute of Physics. In 2003, he was elected to the Council of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He is now the chair of the Public Engagement in Science at the University of Surrey. In 2007, he was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for Science Communication of the Public Engagement in Science at the University of Surrey. In 2007, he was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for Science Communication.
Professor Jim Al-Khalili is an academic, an author and a broadcaster. He is a leading theoretical nuclear physicist based at the University of Surrey in England, where he holds a personal chair in physics as well as a chair in the public engagement in science. He has written a number of popular science books, translated so far into thirteen languages, and presents regular programs on television and radio. He is an executive vice president and a trustee of the British Science Association, a senior advisory to the British Council on science and technology and a member of the Royal Society's Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel. In 2008, he won the Royal Society's Michael Faraday medal for science communication and was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Honors List.
