[1146] pp., [i.e., 573 unnumbered leaves), royal folio (19.25 x 13 in.), full contemporary calf over boards, seven raised bands, red leather gilt-stamped title label, marbled end papers. With the third variant of the List of Subscribers, ending with the Hon. Charles York, Esq. There is also a separate title page for the New Testament. One of 1250 copies. Without serious doubt the magnum opus and high spot of the books John Baskerville (1706-1775) printed during his prolific career. Printer, antiquary, editor and writer John Nichols (1745-1826) hailed Baskerville and this folio Bible (among his other works) when he declared that "these publications rank the name of Baskerville with those persons who have the most contributed, at least in modern times, to the beauty and improvement of the art of Printing. Indeed, it is needless to say to what perfection he brought this excellent art. The paper, the type, and the whole execution of the works performed by him, are the best testimonies of his merit" (Literary Anecdotes of the Eighteenth Century, vol. III, p. 452). And, according to Stanley Morison, "Baskerville s folio English Bible, printed for the University of Cambridge, is the finest presentation of Holy Writ since Richelieu s Latin Vulgate printed at the Imprimerie Royale" (The Typographic Book, p. 48). A very good copy overall. Contents fine other than for some scattered faint spotting on the first and final few leaves; the contemporary covers are rubbed at the edges (more heavily at the tips), head and tail of the spine chipped, scratches and abrasions to the sides; hinges cracked and chipped but covers are holding firmly in place.
