Hognose snakes (Heterodon spp.) are among the most captivating and misunderstood reptiles in North America. Famous for their upturned snouts, dramatic defensive displays, and manageable size, these snakes have captured the attention of hobbyists, educators, and conservationists alike. Yet keeping and understanding hognose snakes requires more than curiosity—it demands knowledge, responsibility, and a commitment to their long-term welfare.
This comprehensive handbook is the definitive resource for anyone passionate about hognose snakes, from dedicated private keepers to advanced herpetologists and conservation professionals. Drawing on cutting-edge science and responsible husbandry practices, it provides in-depth guidance on every aspect of hognose snake biology, care, and conservation.
Inside this book, you will explore:
- Taxonomy and Natural History – Learn about the evolutionary relationships, ecological niches, and geographic distribution of Eastern, Western, and Southern hognoses.
- Anatomy and Physiology – Understand their unique adaptations, rear-fanged dentition, and the ecological significance of their mild venom.
- Behavior and Communication – Gain insight into bluff strikes, hooding, death-feigning, and their subtle signals of stress and comfort.
- Husbandry and Enclosure Design – Master enclosure engineering, substrate layering, thermal gradients, humidity control, and naturalistic bioactive setups.
- Feeding and Nutrition – Overcome feeding refusals, manage diet transitions, and prevent obesity while replicating natural feeding ecology.
- Health and Veterinary Care – Identify common diseases, practice preventive medicine, and apply modern diagnostics and treatments.
- Breeding and Genetics – Explore courtship, incubation, hatchling care, morphs, and the ethical considerations of selective breeding.
- Enrichment and Welfare – Foster natural behaviors through cognitive stimulation, stress reduction, and welfare monitoring.
- Conservation and Legal Frameworks – Examine threats from habitat loss, climate change, and trade while learning about CITES, national protections, and ethical responsibilities.
- Challenges and Rewards – Realistic reflections on the long-term commitment, financial investment, and emotional fulfillment of hognose keeping.
With over 15 detailed chapters, this handbook integrates science, ethics, and conservation into a single authoritative resource. It inspires not only successful keeping but also responsible stewardship—ensuring that hognose snakes thrive in captivity while their wild counterparts remain protected.
Whether you are a new keeper, an experienced breeder, a veterinary professional, or an educator seeking to enrich classroom learning, this book equips you with the knowledge and confidence to care for hognose snakes responsibly and ethically.
The Hognose Snake Handbook is more than a guide—it is a call to stewardship, conservation, and respect for one of the most remarkable reptiles in North America.

Descripción de la tienda
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
