Descripción del artículo del vendedor

Written during his imprisonment in the Tower of London, Sir Walter Raleighs History of the World stands as one of the most ambitious historical works of the early modern period. Blending classical learning with philosophical reflection, Raleigh sought to interpret the rise and fall of civilisations through a moral and political lens. This eighteenth century folio edition presents the work in expanded form, enriched with maps and accompanied by a detailed life of the author, offering both a monumental text and the story of one of England’s most compelling historical figures. Description; London printed for G Conyers and others 1736. Two volume folio set. Eleventh edition printed from a copy revised by himself. Contemporary calf bindings, gilt. Bindings worn with rubbing, scuffing, and edge wear. Joints split, spine ends and corners worn. Structurally sound but with expected age related wear. Engraved portrait by Vertue present, trimmed to border and laid down. Titles printed in red and black. Complete with 8 folding engraved maps and plans. Occasional light spotting and marginal soiling throughout. Engraved armorial bookplate of William Molleson to each volume. A complete and substantial folio set with strong visual and historical presence. Bibliography and Collation; London printed for G Conyers and others 1736 Eleventh edition Two volumes folio Engraved portrait by Vertue 8 folding engraved maps and plans Titles in red and black Provenance William Molleson armorial bookplate Why This Matters; Unlike more common octavo or later reprint editions, this folio issue offers a far more substantial and collectible form of Raleigh’s great work, enhanced by engraved maps and plans. The presence of folding maps significantly increases desirability, while the armorial bookplate adds a layer of historical provenance. As a complete folio set, it sits firmly within the serious collector category for early English historical works. Offered by Atlas Rare Books, specialists in rare and antiquarian books.…
