First raised in 1694 during the expansion of the Army's establishment to fight William III's wars with Louis XIV's expansionist France, the regiment took part in most of Britain's subsequent conflicts - usually with France - throughout the late Stuart, Georgian and Victorian ages. This volume, compiled in 1891 as the Victorian era and Empire reached its acme, covers all these conflicts, including the regiment's part in the War of Spanish Succession; the Seven Years' War; the American War of Independence; and the Peninsular War - as well as its role in colonial conflicts in India, Africa and North America.
