Discover how early ideas about causality and the economy of thought shape our understanding of energy and the laws that govern nature.

In this exploration, the book examines how scientists turn complex phenomena into meaningful, accessible explanations. It asks big questions about causality, the role of experience, and why the universe behaves the way it does. The author argues that scientific progress often comes from simplifying and organizing observations rather than claiming absolute certainty.

Written for readers curious about the foundations of physics and the philosophy of science, this edition ties together historical ideas with modern reflections on energy, measurement, and the limits of our knowledge. It emphasizes practical reasoning and the explainability of natural laws, while acknowledging the gaps that remain in understanding the world.

• How causality is defined as dependence between phenomena, not just sequence or time
• The idea that science advances by economy of thought—simplifying complex results for better understanding
• Discussions on energy conservation, measurement, and the nature of physical quantities
• Connections between historical work and contemporary views on science and reason

Ideal for readers of philosophy of science, history of physics, and anyone curious about how scientific laws are formed and tested.

Excerpt from History and Root of the Principle of the Conservation of Energy

Quite apart from the interest which must attach to the first sketch of a way of regarding science which has become of such great importance to students both of science and of the theory of knowledge, this pamphlet is quite essential to the thorough understanding of Mach's work. In the first place, it contains a reprint of Mach's article (1868) on the definition of mass, which is, per haps, his most important contribution to mechanics; and, in the second place, the discussion of the logical root of the principle of the conservation of energy is fuller than that in any of his later publications.'
