Paperback. The Methodist movement did not spring fully formed from the mind of John Wesley. It emerged from two centuries of religious upheaval, theological debate, and spiritual longing that stretched from Wittenberg to Westminster, from Geneva to Georgia. In this first volume of The History of Methodism, pastor and historian Wilson Pruitt traces the deep roots of the Methodist tradition-from Martin Luther's hammer striking the Wittenberg door in 1517 to the tumultuous decades that shaped the world into which John and Charles Wesley would be born. Along the way, readers will encounter the architects of the English Reformation, the fierce debates between Calvinists and Arminians, the bloodshed of the English Civil War, and the quiet revolution of German Pietism.Drawing extensively on John Wesley's own writings and historical commentaries, Pruitt reveals how Wesley understood himself not as an innovator but as an inheritor-someone who drew deeply from Cranmer's prayer book, Hooker's theology, Taylor's devotional writings, and Spener's vision for small-group discipleship. The quest for "primitive Christianity" that animated Wesley's ministry was itself a seventeenth-century obsession, and understanding it unlocks the logic of early Methodism. This is history written for the church-accessible, engaging, and always attentive to the spiritual currents beneath the political surface. Whether you are a lifelong Methodist seeking to understand your tradition, a student of Reformation history, or simply curious about how one of the world's largest Protestant movements came to be, this volume offers an essential foundation.Volume 2 will continue the story with the Wesley family, the Holy Club at Oxford, and the birth of the Methodist revival. The Methodist movement did not spring fully formed from the mind of John Wesley. It emerged from two centuries of religious upheaval, theological debate, and spiritual longing that stretched from Wittenberg to Westminster, from Geneva to Georgia.
In this first volume of The History of Methodism, pastor and historian Wilson Pruitt traces the deep roots of the Methodist tradition—from Martin Luther's hammer striking the Wittenberg door in 1517 to the tumultuous decades that shaped the world into which John and Charles Wesley would be born. Along the way, readers will encounter the architects of the English Reformation, the fierce debates between Calvinists and Arminians, the bloodshed of the English Civil War, and the quiet revolution of German Pietism.
Drawing extensively on John Wesley's own writings and historical commentaries, Pruitt reveals how Wesley understood himself not as an innovator but as an inheritor—someone who drew deeply from Cranmer's prayer book, Hooker's theology, Taylor's devotional writings, and Spener's vision for small-group discipleship. The quest for "primitive Christianity" that animated Wesley's ministry was itself a seventeenth-century obsession, and understanding it unlocks the logic of early Methodism.
This is history written for the church—accessible, engaging, and always attentive to the spiritual currents beneath the political surface. Whether you are a lifelong Methodist seeking to understand your tradition, a student of Reformation history, or simply curious about how one of the world's largest Protestant movements came to be, this volume offers an essential foundation.
Volume 2 will continue the story with the Wesley family, the Holy Club at Oxford, and the birth of the Methodist revival.
