Germany Through the Ages: A Story of Power, Culture, and Change
When you think of German history, do the world wars come to mind first? Those are important, but they are just a small part of Germany’s long history. In fact, Germany did not even exist as a country for most of its history! German-speaking lands were once home to different kingdoms and empires with a rich culture.
For hundreds of years, German lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire-a group of states in Central Europe that French writer Voltaire joked was "neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire." It wasn’t until Napoleon swept through Europe, breaking apart the old ways, that the Holy Roman Empire ended and powers like Prussia and Austria-Hungary began to rise.
This book explores how German lands helped shape Europe and the world. From the Teutonic Knights to the achievements of German thinkers like Kant, Germany has played a big role in history. This book covers it all-from the early tribes and famous empires to the modern reunification of Germany.
Inside this book, you’ll learn about:
-
- The early Germanic tribes and how they influenced Europe
- The rise of the Holy Roman Empire and its importance
- The Teutonic Knights’ Crusades in the Baltic
- The power of Prussia and Austria-Hungary as they moved toward a united Germany
- The world wars and Germany’s path through conflict and peace
- Modern Germany today and how the country had been shaped by its history but is looking toward the future
- And so much more!
