"An indisputable classic of the new historiography - a compact encyclopedia for understanding the historical evolution of French civilization and culture!

Hailed by academia as a classic of the ""new historiography,"" this book is a masterpiece that combines passion, erudition, and a deep command of historical sources. First published in 1958, it has been reprinted numerous times and translated into multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, and Japanese. Its narrative spans from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, encompassing history, politics, economy, culture, literature, philosophy, religion, art, science, and technology, presenting readers with a France that is both rich and free, romantic and rigorous.

The book's purpose is not to list historical events or replicate textbook narratives but to adopt a new historical perspective to reveal the true trajectory of French civilization's evolution over more than a millennium, as well as the intrinsic relationships among the many cultural factors that have shaped France and the French character over the centuries.
