Print on Demand. This book is a fascinating exploration of the origins and evolution of the Christian Church. The author guides the reader through a detailed account of the Church's early development, focusing on its struggles against both internal and external forces. The book delves into the tense relationship between Christianity and Judaism in its nascent years, detailing how the Church wrestled with the question of how to reconcile its universal message with the Jewish roots of its origins. The author then analyzes the complex encounter between Christianity and the Roman world, showcasing how the Church faced persecution and ultimately triumphed over the might of the empire. The book also examines the impact of heathen philosophies and practices on the Church's internal development, highlighting the rise of Gnosticism as a significant challenge to Christian orthodoxy. Beyond chronicling the Church's early history, this book delves into the philosophical and theological questions that shaped its growth. The author meticulously explains the evolution of Church structure and authority, tracing the shift from the decentralized structure of the early Church to the more centralized and hierarchical Catholicism of later centuries. This insightful book offers a compelling account of the Church's emergence and illuminates the enduring impact of its fundamental tenets and practices on Western civilization. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Medieval Christianity reveals how belief, ritual, and institutional power shaped daily life.
This concise history examines how churches, clerical authority, and social practices intertwined to form the medieval world. It traces how ideas like sacraments, indulgences, and saints influenced everyday conduct, reform movements, and conflict across centuries.
The book surveys the spread of Christianity, the growth of church authority, and the ways religious life touched common people, rulers, and communities. It shows how power was exercised through preaching, ritual, and institutions, and how reforms sought to correct or protest established practices.
- How conversion and church life affected communities and daily routines
- How doctrines, sacraments, and rituals shaped belief and behavior
- How institutions like monasteries, bishops, and popes wielded power
- How reform, controversy, and inquisitions influenced society
Ideal for readers of religious history, medieval studies, and anyone curious about how faith and power interacted in the past.

Reseña del editor
The little book herewith given to the public is based upon the Kirchengeschichte im Grundriss, by Professor Rudolph Sohm, professor of juris prudence in the University of Leipzig, the many excellencies of which are enhanced by the fact that here Church history is written from the stand-point of 'a lawyer. The aim has been to preserve every thing of value to the American reader which the original work contains, and to add much which it omits or barely mentions. Thus 17, 18, 37, 38, 39, 53, 54, 55, 56, are all additional, as also the supplementary and explanatory notes, and the chronological tables. In the translated portions, omissions and additions were made, and statements of opinion altered whenever it was deemed necessary. The book in its English form, therefore, is prac tically an independent work.
