8 volume complete set. No date given, c1880. Groombridge 8 vo. edition with colored engravings published in London. Red cloth hardcover boards with stamped designs in the high Victorian style with gilt lettering and ornate scrollwork design; gilt page edges. All bindings complete with all colored bird engravings present with tissue guards. Boards with heavy wear to the spines; edges frayed; some with spine slant; interior hinges weak; end pages soiled; pages dusty with light age toning. Interiors and engravings better with nice vibrant coloring, edges may have light staining or toning but the birds themselves are very good. Vol 1 = 222 pages with 43 engravings, Vol 2 = 196 pages with 47 engravings, Vol 3 = 215 pages with 43 engravings, Vol 4 = 235 pages with 48 engravings, Vol 5 = 192 pages with 47 engravings, Vol 6 = 176 pages with 44 engravings, Vol 7 = 174 pages with 42 engravings, Vol 8 = 156 pages with 44 engravings. Francis Orpen Morris (1810 ? 1893) was an Irish clergyman, notable as "parson-naturalist" (ornithologist and entomologist) and as the author of many books on natural history and heritage buildings. He was a pioneer of the movement to protect birds from the plume trade and was a co-founder of the Plumage League. Morris' books were mostly published by Groombridge & Sons, of London. His first best-seller was "A History of British Birds" which was originally published in Folio from June 1850 in monthly parts over a period of some seven years. N° de ref. del artículo 008632
