Print on Demand. This book traces the history of the Northwest Territory from its earliest indigenous inhabitants to the era just before the Revolutionary War. The author describes the territory's geography and explains the motivations of France, Spain and England to explore and claim land and resources in that region. From Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's entrada in the 1540s to Englishman Christopher Gist's explorations on behalf of the Ohio Company in the 1750s, the author provides rich accounts of the expeditions that opened up the lands west of the Appalachian Mountains. This book highlights the diplomatic tensions between the European powers in North America and offers vivid depictions of battles over control of the Ohio. The text concludes with the outbreak of the French and Indian War in 1754, which marked a turning point in the contest for global empire and the fate of the Northwest Territory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Ess than half a century has rolled into eternity since the Indian title to any portion of the soil of Iowa was extinguished, and the Black Hawk Purchase permitted the resistless tide of emigration westward to flow across the Mississippi; and only thirty-three years ago the Sac and Fox Indians reluctantly left their beautiful hunting-grounds, a por tion of which was the southern part of Appanoose County. Only forty years have elapsed since the adventurous kirby and wells built the first rude cabins in the southern part of the county, followed a few years after by the brave and hardy pioneers who settled in the edges of the beautiful groves that deck the expanses of' prairie within its borders, But these fleeting years have been replete with eventful changes - of history that it has been the purpose of this work to gather, arrange and preserve for transmission to posterity as one of the almost countless chapters in the annals of this great country.
