"Who are you men, armoured in mail, who come sailing upon the sliding sea-road to the land of Britannia? Long have I held the sea-watch in season as the king’s coast-warden, that no pirates might pillage the people of Vortigern. Never have I seen a noble more mighty or more haughty!" This is how the British coast-warden greets Hengest, the first named Anglo-Saxon to come to Britain. After the failure of the Finnesburh mission, King Hoc exiled Hengest, and he set sail with three ships and three hundred men in the hope of serving King Vortigern as a mercenary. The story that follows is as exciting as the story of Beowulf. It includes several battles, a femme fatale (Hengest’s daughter, Rowena), and characters from the Arthurian legend, including Merlin and Uther. It also includes a battle between dragons, a contest between wizards, and a clash of faiths. This reconstruction of the lost Saga of Hengest is told in a modern version of the Anglo-Saxon alliterative line and is closely based on original sources, extracts from which are given at the end of the book along with detailed notes and a bibliography.

Acerca del autor
I was brought up in Conisbrough, went to Station Road School, and have lived at various times on Daylands Avenue, Roberts Avenue and Castle Avenue. The town, with its rich history and magnificent castle, has been an important influence in my life and has inspired some of my best work. I read English at St David’s, Lampeter and Leeds University, and am now a teacher and writer.
I started by writing poetry - but nobody read it, so I tried another of my interests: Dark Age fiction - Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and so on. I know what you're thinking (get a life!) but it's a popular niche, and I found that people were actually reading my books. I also write Science Fiction, Jane Austen sequels, all sorts of other stuff - and more poetry (poetry is like a drug for me and I can't give it up). I also write education publications, mainly study notes, which sell far more than anything else I write. Every now and then I return to my major project which is a Dark Age Pentalogy intended to be 1000+ pages long (it's a prose version of my book, Angleland, which is available in etext and paperback). I'm up to page 25 at the moment (just kidding - I have a draft of the whole thing, but it's going to take a lot more long and lonely nights to make it readable). I am always delighted to receive feedback on my books and can be contacted at xopherw@hotmail.com.

Descripción de la tienda
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
