Paperback. Amelia Grant has spent twenty-five years becoming impossible to ignore. She can name every country she's conquered and not one place she's called home. From the corner office to the first-class cabin, she has built a life that photographs beautifully and feels like nothing at all. Then her mother dies, and among the keepsakes Amelia finds a single line in her handwriting: Promise me you'll build a life that leaves room for your soul.Within months, Amelia has walked away from the career everyone told her not to leave, for a hundred and sixty broken-down acres in a town of eleven hundred people who don't trust her, a mortgage she can barely afford, and a small white church where the pastor turns out to be the stranger she once spent an unforgettable night talking to in a snowbound airport. What follows isn't the story you expect. It isn't a woman trading ambition for love. It's two people, each carrying their own quiet exhaustion, discovering, through fire and financial ruin and frozen pipes, through a fortune nearly lost and a family wound that never quite closes, that the life worth building isn't the one that reaches the highest. It's the one that goes the deepest.Warm, wise, and unflinching about what it actually costs to change your life at forty-eight, HENDRICKS PLACE is a novel for anyone who has ever wondered, in the middle of a life that looks successful from the outside, whether they've left any room for their own soul. For readers of Elizabeth Strout, Kent Haruf, and Marilynne Robinson, a story about second chances, chosen family, and the courage it takes to go deeper instead of higher. She can name every country she's conquered and not one place she's called home. From the corner office to the first-class cabin, she has built a life that photographs beautifully and feels like nothing at all.
Then her mother dies, and among the keepsakes Amelia finds a single line in her handwriting:
Promise me you'll build a life that leaves room for your soul.
Within months, Amelia has walked away from the career everyone told her not to leave, for a hundred and sixty broken-down acres in a town of eleven hundred people who don't trust her, a mortgage she can barely afford, and a small white church where the pastor turns out to be the stranger she once spent an unforgettable night talking to in a snowbound airport.
It's the one that goes the deepest.
Warm, wise, and unflinching about what it actually costs to change your life at forty-eight, HENDRICKS PLACE is a novel for anyone who has ever wondered, in the middle of a life that looks successful from the outside, whether they've left any room for their own soul.
For readers of Elizabeth Strout, Kent Haruf, and Marilynne Robinson, a story about second chances, chosen family, and the courage it takes to go deeper instead of higher.
