In the Hands of Destiny (Paperback)

In the Hands of Destiny is a deeply moving love story that transcends borders, defies circumstances, and proves that sometimes the most powerful journeys begin with a single, unexpected connection.

Kamilah, a devoted community worker in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has built her life around service, faith, and resilience. She knows what it means to carry weight: the weight of others' hopes, the burden of survival in a country that demands everything and promises little. She has learned to protect her heart, to measure love in careful doses, to keep moving forward even when the ground beneath her feet is uncertain.

Amari, a fisherman from La Gonâve, Haiti, turned entrepreneur in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, understands the language of perseverance. He has rebuilt himself from nothing, learned to navigate systems designed to break him, and discovered that strength isn't always loud. Sometimes it's the quiet decision to keep going when everything says stop.

When their worlds collide through a simple phone call, neither expects what follows. What begins as tentative conversation evolves into something neither can ignore: a connection that feels like recognition, like coming home to a place they've never been. But love, real love, is never simple. Especially not when it must survive across distance, through migration challenges, financial struggles, and the weight of dreams deferred.

From the vibrant, complicated streets of Port-au-Prince to the uncertain promise of Santo Domingo, from the hope of new beginnings in Friusa to the terrifying realities of immigration enforcement, Kamilah and Amari's story unfolds with raw honesty. This is not a fairy tale. It is a testament to what happens when two people choose each other, again and again, even when the world gives them every reason not to.

Through digital intimacy that bridges impossible distances, through moments of passion that remind them why they're fighting, through heartbreak that nearly breaks them, and through an unexpected pregnancy that redefines everything they thought they knew about their future, Kamilah and Amari build something that cannot be shaken. Not a perfect love, but a true one. Not an easy love, but one worth every sacrifice.

Written with poetic intensity and unflinching authenticity, In the Hands of Destiny explores themes of displacement, resilience, faith, and the transformative power of choosing love when survival itself is a daily battle. It is a story about two people who refuse to let circumstances define their destiny, who believe that love, when it's honest, when it's earned, when it's nurtured through every storm, can rewrite the future.

This is a love letter to Haiti, to the Caribbean diaspora, to everyone who has ever loved across borders, and to all those who understand that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is stay. Not in a place, but in love itself.

Samil Lexima is a Haitian author writing stories about love, survival, and the quiet courage it takes to build a life when the world keeps trying to take it from you. His debut novel, In the Hands of Destiny, is a cross-border love story inspired by real events, exploring migration, faith, and refusing to let circumstance write your ending.

Born in Haiti and shaped by the resilience of the diaspora, Samil writes with raw honesty about displacement, identity, and what it means to carry multiple worlds inside one heart. He writes to remember. To breathe. To keep something alive that shouldn't have made it this far but did.

He believes stories can heal, and that words, if we let them, can be doors, mirrors, maps.
