Descripción

One leaf, 4to. On the recto (headed "Progress of the Movement") the motion Henry Richard has given notice of in Parliament is quoted and discussed as well as other initiatives taken round the world, concluding with the American Peace Society "working energetically . . . [holding] meetings . . . to celebrate the Victory of the Washington Treaty . . . addressed by . . . . Elihu Burritt . . . and other eminent men." On the verso (headed "International Arbitration. | Three years Guarantee for £10,000") are listed contributors of substantial sums for three years or one (41 neames, many with the surname "Pease" and including James Baldwin - see below). WITH: an autograph letter signed by Lewis Appleton (and Arthur O'Neill), two pages, 4to, Birmingham, 5 Feb. 1872, explaining to his heir of the same name how James Baldwin deceased had undertaken to pay instalments every three years to the International Arbitration 10,000£ Guarantee Fund, referring to the published list (above) and anticipating the Henry Richard motion (see above). He expresses their sense of loss as a "Peace Party" of someone who used his wealth "for the advancement of the Cause of 'Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men.'" Presumably they hope the heir will continue the instalments. A printed page is conjoint with the letteer, headed "Testimonies in Favour of International Arbitration for the Prevention of War", including quotations (the Queen, the President of the USAGladstone, Michel Chevalier, etc), some referring to the Washington Treaty as a model for negotiation between nations.
