47x71cm, B/w folding map. // An elusive map produced in 1928 showing the catchment area of the Yellow River in China from it sources in the Gobi Desert through the length of northern China to its disgorge into the Yellow Sea. The map draws, it seems, on the work and explorations of Ferdinand von Richtofen, the Austrian geologist, Eduard Suess, and the Russian geologist, Vladimir Obruchev, with whom Suess had a lengthy working relationship and correspondence. The map was published by Justus Perthes, a German publishing hpise based in Gotha who specialized in geographical and historical atlases. This map appears to have been taken from an edition of Petermann's Geographischen Mitteilungen (name appears at top left of map) published by Justus Perthes and long edited from 1909-1937 by Prof Paul Langhans whose name appears at the bottom of the map. All text in German. Size of map image 47x71cm. The map in fine condition with the usual creases along fold lines. Rare.
