15.5x9.5cm (6"x3¾"). French language. Popular romance-and-adventure novel of the period, originally published 1690. Two parts bound in one volume, pagination continuous. Separate title-pages, that of first part (Swart) printed in black and red, that of second part (Alberts) in black only. pp(4)/(6)318/(4) including two blank preliminary leaves and two blank final leaves; with identical title-page vignettes, a few headpieces and decorated capitals, single tailpiece, and 22 engraved plates including frontispiece. Narrow ribbon bookmark. Blue-speckled edges. Near-contemporary full calf. Spine with five raised bands, gilt rules, and gilt title on black leather label. Boards with gilt ruled borders and modest inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Spine chipped including loss at head and slight loss at foot, rubbed, and with a number of surface cracks; gilt dull, label chipped with loss of first three letters of 'Histoire'. Front hinge broken, front board detached; rear hinge with open split from head to foot, rear board only loosely held. Board surfaces lightly rubbed, both front and rear with a little loss of hide adjacent to hinges. Board edges rubbed; corners worn, though still quite square. Front endpapers soiled at lower outer corners, rear endpapers split along hinge. First title-page lightly dust-marked, with neat inscription of some age to right of title. A few pages with spots or minor blemishes confined to fore- & lower margins, occasional light pencil highlighting in margins. Top edge of text-block quite deeply darkened, other edges toned.
