This famous work was made just after World War II, while Thomas Tindale was a consultant to the Japanese government. . THE SEKI COLLECTION OF ANCIENT PAPER SAMPLES: The work contains the oldest authenticated samples of early Washi paper ever collected and placed into book form. The first sample is a Komashi made in 740 CE. Equal to Tempyo 12th year, during the reign of Emperor Shomu Tenno [729-749 CE]. Other samples continue from 12th century down to 1923. . Tindale gathered the greats of Washi makers, and urged them to participate in the compilation of the most definitive and comprehensive book ever created documenting Japan's celebrated paper makers, paper making villages with samples from all-known paper makers. A dying art, handmade paper makers have decreased dramatically since publication of this great book.
