Print on Demand. This book explores the fundamental shift in the relationship between labor and capital in the early 20th century, arguing for a new economic model based on the principle of partnership. The author traces the evolution of the wage system, beginning with the Industrial Revolution and its impact on feudal society, and how it became the dominant system of labor, despite its inherent flaws. The author examines the rise of trade unions and the limitations of political solutions for addressing the inherent inequalities of the wage system. The central theme of the book is the need for a new industrial system that recognizes the value of labor not as a mere commodity but as a key partner in production. The author proposes the formation of National Guilds, self -governing organizations that encompass all aspects of an industry, from management to labor, and proposes the abolition of the wage system. This book offers a compelling vision of a more just and equitable industrial future and presents a powerful critique of the prevailing economic order. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Rethinking work, wages, and local life for a democratic economy
This book argues that real economic democracy must balance national forces with vibrant, local communities. It challenges centralization and asks how guilds can guide production, wages, and culture without stifling creativity.
In a clear, provocative voice, the author examines how capitalism and wage systems shape what we make, how we live, and what we value. The discussion spans the role of education, industry, and the “permanent hypothesis” that underpins power in the economy, offering a path toward more humane work and meaningful leisure.- Explore how wage policy can be a engine for high-quality work and true prosperity
- See why local life and regional pride matter for intellectual and artistic vitality
- Learn how guild-inspired ideas could shape production, consumption, and governance
- Consider the ethical questions of wealth, amenity, and the obligation to leisure

Reseña del editor
Indirect interest in maintaining the unemployed - the indirect interest, namely, of safeguarding order. The Trade Unions, likewise, have an interest secondary to that of the industry itself, since their only object in undertaking the support of their unemployed is the maintenance of their own Union. Only the Employers, therefore, have a direct interest in the matter; and one which, besides being essential, is comparable to other of their functions. In what way, for instance sentiment apart - does either the necessity or the obligation to maintain a reserve of Labour differ from the admitted necessity and obligation of the employer to maintain his reserves of mechanical power, horse power, or raw materials? In none of these instances does he expect the State or other corporations to assist him in bearing the cost of maintaining a reserve, why, then, should he expect the cost of his Labour reserve to be borne by others The reply, of course, is that it is due partly to custom and partly to the circumstance that in fact the employer is able to throw the cost of his Labour-reserve upon others. But not only is his right to do even what he can here challenged, but proposals are made for instantly laying upon his shoulders a burden which was always properly his own, but which hitherto he has shifted to the shoulders of the State and the Trade Unions. In Short, Mr. Hobson's suggestion is that in future every industry shall bear its own burden of Labour reserve, without the aid of either the State or the Trade Unions.
