A good two volume set of 'The Guardian', printed in London, 1734. A collection of one hundred and seventy five extracts dating from March 12th to October 1st 1713 by Addison, Steele and others. 12mo, 2 vols, bound in period blind-tooled full calf, spines with five raised bands and brown morocco numbering pieces, compartments ornately gilt decorated and lettered, all page edges speckled red. Period plain endpapers. An attractive set. The books measure 10.5cm x 17.5cm. The contents of both volumes are complete, meeting collation: [8] ,9-350, [10]; [6], 7-358, [14]pp, with an engraved portrait vignette to both title pages. Decorative initials and headpieces. Bindings are firm, some very thin partial cracks to hinges, 3 of the 4 spine ends with some chipping and general light wear, but still a very attractive set as seen: contents firmly bound and very good, lightly toned with the odd minor spot, crease or mark. Joseph Addison's The Guardian was a periodical published in the early eighteenth century. It consisted of 175 issues that were published between March 1713 and October 1713. The Guardian was a continuation of Addison's earlier publication, The Tatler. The Guardian contained essays, poetry, and literary criticism, and its themes included morality, society, and politics. The periodical was notable for its use of allegory and satire, and it often featured fictional characters who represented different aspects of society. Addison's writing was praised for its clarity, elegance, and wit, and The Guardian was widely read and influential during its time. Today, it is regarded as an important work in the history of English literature and journalism. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-1677938063523
